Two Wells Fargo customers are calling the banking giant after scammers withdrew tens of thousands of dollars from their accounts in minutes.
Jolinda Crocker says $60,000 was taken from her account while she was teaching at her music school in Italy, the Daily Mail reports.
Crocker says she received a text message from the bank asking her to call and verify that she made two transactions, one for $24,973 and another for about $10,000.
She promptly called the bank, filed a fraud report online and thought everything was fine.
But a week and a half later, the bank started blaming Crocker, saying she had initiated $60,000 in transactions herself, even though her login history shows a login from Italy and another from California on the same day.
Crocker has now fought the bank for two years to get her money back.
“It feels like everyone is just rolling their eyes. $60,000 is nothing to Wells Fargo, but it is my savings.”
The story is similar to that of Judy Barr, who lost $23,865 to criminals posing as Wells Fargo’s fraud department.
The scammers, who somehow had Barr’s Social Security number and personal banking information, sent an authorization code to Barr’s phone and asked her to redial the numbers.
Now the bank says Barr essentially initiated the transactions himself and is refusing to pay them back.
‘I was so ashamed that I didn’t even want to meet my friends for dinner. I felt like such an idiot. I was a Wells Fargo customer for over 20 years, but they have refused to take any responsibility. They put me through endless loops to get my money back.”
Wells Fargo is one of several major U.S. banks facing lawsuits from customers who allege the financial giants have lax security measures, failed to properly verify large transactions and shrugged off fraudulent transactions being reported in real time.
