Bank of America is experiencing large-scale data breaches, exposing Social Security numbers, addresses and additional sensitive data to hackers

Tens of thousands of Bank of America customers are now at risk of being targeted by identity fraud after a massive security breach exposed their critical personal information.

A data breach notification filed in Maine shows that 57,028 Bank of America customers were exposed to an outage at Infosys McCamish Systems (IMS), a provider of business process insurance solutions used by the bank.

A notification letter from IMS states that data related to one of Bank of America’s deferred compensation plans, which contain virtually everything a hacker would need to steal someone’s identity, has been accessed.

“It is unlikely that we can determine with certainty what personal information was obtained from IMS as a result of this incident.

According to our records, the deferred compensation plan information may have included your first and last name, address, work email address, date of birth, social security number, and other account information.

In response to the breach, IMS offered victims a two-year free identity theft protection program from Experian and recommended that Bank of America customers reset their passwords and monitor their accounts for suspicious activity.

“While we are not aware of any misuse involving your information, we are letting you know that Bank of America will offer a complimentary two-year membership to an identity theft protection service offered by Experian IdentityWorksSM.

You will not be charged for this service, but you will need to sign up for activation. This product gives you daily monitoring of your credit reports from the three national credit reporting companies (Experian, Equifax® and TransUnion®), internet monitoring and identity theft resolution. This service will expire at the end of the free period and will not automatically renew.”
