Popular crypto wallet MetaMask is seeing a surge in active users.

In a statement, MetaMask developer Consensys say that the wallet’s monthly active users (MAU) grew from 19 million to more than 30 million between September 2023 and January 2024, representing an increase of more than 55%.

The current number of monthly active users almost matches Metamask’s historic high of 31.7 million in January 2022.

“This growth almost matches the peak numbers during the bull market in 2022.”

The announcement comes after MetaMask partnered with trading platform Robinhood to allow users to seamlessly purchase crypto assets directly from the wallet.

Last year, MetaMask also introduced a new feature that allows users to convert their digital assets into fiat money by sending the crypto directly to their bank or PayPal account.

Consensys says the integration of major traditional financial players into the wallet, along with regulatory improvements, is driving broader mainstream adoption.

“More broadly, web3 has seen significant signals of mainstream adoption with an increasingly strong regulatory, workforce and technical base, and growing regulatory certainty in jurisdictions such as the UK, EU and Hong Kong.”

Citing the results of a Morning Consult survey, Consensys says that 76% of US crypto owners consider security the most important factor influencing their choice of wallet.

Says Consensys chief ethos officer and co-founder of MetaMask Dan Finlay:

“As we witness the growth of MetaMask and the broader Web3 ecosystem, we understand that the foundation of this expansion is user trust and security.”
