Christie’s auction house is set to auction five digital artworks by the late Keith Haring – celebrated for his work in pop art and social justice in the 1980s – via an NFT drop from September 12 to 20. The famous masterpieces are expected to go under the auction hammer for a price of $220,000 to $500,000 each.

The online NFT auction, called ‘Keith Haring: Pixel Pioneer’, will showcase Haring’s talents, created in 1987 on a Commodore Amiga computer donated to the legend by Timothy Leary. The digital images, previously only accessible on floppy disk, will soon be available on the Ethereum blockchain.

These artistic triumphs mark an intriguing international tour of Haring’s classic works of art that embrace innovation and will also be spotlighted at Korea’s ‘The Gateway’ event from September 7 to 8 and Christie’s, New York, from 14 to 19 September, thanks to a recent partnership with the global licensing agency Artestar and collaborative technology specialist Digital Practice.

The crossroads between traditional and modern art

Haring, who sadly passed away in 1990 from AIDS-related health problems, had a broad philosophy that “art is for everyone.” For this reason, he remains famous for his bold, repetitive figure sculptures and dedication to making art accessible to all. In the artist’s heyday, his artwork was often on display in public spaces, such as the New York subway. Interestingly, these works of art went beyond digital and caught the attention of passersby with chalk. Challenging the norms of traditional art consumption, Christie’s vice president Nicole Sales Giles believes that if Haring were here, he would be championing the medium behind crypto art.

In light of the correlated ideologies between the contemporary digital art landscape and the traditional domain of creatives, the two are increasingly intersecting. LACMA NFTs is a notable recent example.

Given Haring’s history and appeal, these upcoming Christie’s auctions and exhibitions are expected to attract a wide range of collectors, from conventional art enthusiasts to Web3 fanatics.
