Amid the generally positive news in the web3 gaming community, we have another unfortunate story to report. This one concerns Eternal Dragons, who completely shut down their game! Development of Eternal Dragons has already stopped. Closure of the servers, website and Discord will follow in the coming weeks.
After booming last year, a lack of players and continued funding has brought a new game to a sudden halt. Despite pioneering the idea of using NFTs as a support/profit sharing mechanism for professional players, Eternal Dragons was unable to attract the audience they needed to continue development.
But for those with Eternal Dragons NFTs, there is a glimmer of good news. The Eternal Dragons team says they will be buying back Genesis Dragons and Eggs from players. This only affects NFTs from the Genesis Collection, and hatching of new eggs has already stopped. The team is offering $30 USDC for each egg, and $12 to $120 USDC for dragons, depending on rarity. And while this may not satisfy those who paid premium prices a year ago, it’s still better than nothing, which is what most item owners receive when a game closes.

Final thoughts
Although it may seem like it sometimes, not everyone can win. And unfortunately, Eternal Dragons is one of the losers. While their game didn’t really provide much excitement personally, the concept behind their player cards is interesting and potentially paves the way for future NFTs with similar ideas.
These player cards acted as a kind of investment in a particular professional player, allowing cardholders to claim a percentage of that player’s winnings from tournaments and other competitions.
