Gala Games migrates treasure chest to GalaChain

User Avatar

The Gala Games treasury no longer exists, as Gala is trying to migrate everything to their GalaChain! All items previously stored in players’ treasure chests are still in their inventories, but can now only be minted directly on the GalaChain.

Gala Games has long used their own wallets to store players’ tokens and distribute NFTs. And while that still applies, players can now load these tokens and wallet items onto the GalaChain for free!

Unfortunately, the whole process is a bit confusing. So let’s see if I can clear it up a bit. All NFTs that players previously purchased directly from Gala Games or through a secondary market are on the Ethereum blockchain. Items gifted to players (via Gala Gold rewards or various competitions) have been deposited into a ‘treasure chest’, which is nothing more than a custodial wallet managed by Gala Games.

What is going on?

The real change here is twofold. First, the term Treasury no longer exists. Players now only have inventory. Secondly, if players want to withdraw an item or token from their custodial wallet, they must store it on the GalaChain. GalaChain is the sidechain of Gala Games and where all Gala apps will reside in the future.

However, in order to trade or sell an item, it must be on the Ethereum blockchain. Moving an NFT from GalaChain to Ethereum costs a fee in GALA tokens. Hopefully, Gala will offer a marketplace for players on GalaChain at some point in the future. Because until then, the only benefit of GalaChain seems to be the ability to make purchases directly from Gala without paying ETH fees. Which they really should have had a long time ago, as they forced users to transfer ETH to their custodial wallet before any purchases could be made.

Another confusing aspect is the use of the term ‘allowance’. Unminted items will be shown as ‘GalaChain Allowance’. If you choose to ‘Fulfill Consent’ for an item, that item will be created for you on the GalaChain. They say they are open to new terms, but Grant makes the most sense for them.

But either way, storing items from your inventory on GalaChain is free. Items for Common Ground (formerly Town Star) cannot yet be minted in GalaChain. That functionality is still being worked on.

GalaChain will be the future of Gala Games. All items minted from the games into the Gala ecosystem will appear on GalaChain. This change also affects Founder Node payouts. Rewards for running a Founder’s Node are also distributed to GalaChain.
