Hackers Claim Access to 400,000 Bitfinex Crypto Accounts, Bitfinex CTO Rejects

A hacking group claimed to have opened a total of four lakh accounts of the Bitfinex crypto exchange, while Bitfinex’s CTO denied these claims.

Recently, infamous hacking group FSOCIETY claimed on its dark web homepage that they had successfully hacked several victims, including crypto exchange BitFinex.

The hacking group claimed they had access to 2.5 TB of Bitfinex exchange information and the personal data of 400,000 users. They said that all KYC documents of the hacked users would be made public if Bitfinex did not meet their demands.

In response, Bitfinex CTO Paolo Ardoino said that hackers are spreading fake news around the crypto exchange Bitfinex because only 5,000 of the 25,000 shared email addresses belong to the Bitfinex user list.

Paolo noted that if that was part of the Bitfinex database, we would expect 100% matching.

Furthermore, Bitfinex’s CTO also noted that the alleged hackers had not contacted the Bitfinex team for any form of ransom. Their message was published on April 25, allowing seven days of contact. However, it was only discovered yesterday. It was suggested that if they had real information they would have asked for a ransom via our bug bounty program, customer support ticket, emails, Twitter, etc., but no such request could be found.

In his final words, the CTO said that no one can download users’ KYC documents in bulk, but the Bitfinex security expert will still keep a constant eye on it to combat any kind of unethical activity.

It appears that the trading price of Bitfinex’s native token called “UNUS SED LEO” (LEO) remains unaffected after a small sudden dump.

This token was launched in May 2019 by cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex as a utility token. LEO token can be used to reduce trading costs on the Bitfinex platform and participate in certain activities such as token burns and token sales.
