A little less than two years ago, the Steam gaming empire had its eyes rolled and developers crying when it banned NFTs from its platform. However, despite their best efforts, this divisive strategy has not gone quite as planned.
Due to the resilient nature of the Web3 audience, a number of titles have emerged on the Steam market navigating a vague gray area in the Ts and Cs. These come in the form of games that remove their crypto elements for Steam users, and games that use the crafty use of offline transactions to enable the NFT component.
NFT snowboard romp, Evaverse, for example, flew under the radar for a while and launched before Steam announced its ban. Effectively, allowing gamers to access and use their NFTs through their own third-party player account. Due to the subtle tactics, most Steam users remain oblivious to the NFT element, and the game has received mostly positive reviews.
Some games are more careful on Steam
Other games interested in Steam’s massive user base have taken a more cautious approach to the market. Essentially all NFT and crypto components will be removed so they can abide by Steam’s rules. As a result, titles like Gala Games’ Superior have launched limited versions of their games to entice users to seek out the full version, and to prepare if Steam were to soften its approach to NFTs on its platform. Meanwhile, other projects, such as Goblintown, just want to cause a stir by making their image public for all to see!
For now, Steam’s 30 million active users are enough to entice NFT games to find a way to market, but Epic still represents the best option for those looking for the full Web3 experience.
