Play to earn games to watch in August

Summer isn’t quite over yet! There is still some time to waste those hot days and nights playing web3 games! Here are a few we think you should keep an eye out for in August.

While web3 gaming is still in its infancy in many ways, it continues to grow and mature. More and more playable alphas/betas/demos are being released to the public. And while most of these games are still rough in many areas, the potential is there. And if you’ve been sleeping on web3 gaming, you might want to wake up.

We are going into August with plenty to do. From the Metalcore alpha playtest to the Parallel beta, to the Fableborne play to mint event, there’s something available for almost every genre of gaming.

Read on to learn about a few of the games we’ll be keeping an eye on over the next month!

Splinterlands

With their sizable user base, longevity, and steady stream of updates and changes, Splinterlands is mentioned a lot in these posts. They recently released an update that bans bot accounts from playing in modern format (one of two games available in the game), and saw an amazing increase in active players. And this month they should release version 1.5 of their country gameplay.

This land update allows players to deploy Splinterland cards to land plots and farm them for various resources including SPS token. When this update is launched, the completely passive income from holding land will disappear. Instead, players must allocate cards to their plots and choose to produce SPS Tokens.

And if you don’t own land? No problem! You can just find an unused plot and work it for yourself, paying a fee to the landowner in the process!

This land release will be a significant moment for Splinterlands and could potentially revive their weak economy – or end up being a disappointing dud.

Fabulous

Fableborne recently announced that they will be holding a number of ‘play to mint’ events for their upcoming Primordials coin.

With a game that combines action-based gameplay with base building, Fableborne can appeal to the more strategic gamers as well as those who like to rely on their reflexes. Stay tuned to Fableborne’s social media channels to learn more about the game of grabbing opportunities. And also to see what else Fableborne has planned this month!

Hunters on the chain

Hunters On-Chain is finally coming to the mainnet, though access is still limited to those who own a Genesis Hunter. This game was a notable entry in our weekly charts when they first launched their beta. Once they release their mobile app and open up the game to the wider public, it will be very interesting to see if they can regain the popularity they had a few months ago.

Anyway, with the launch of the mainnet, everything is now forever and players can play and earn by selling items they find in chests.

Upland continues to grow and recently added an impressive ‘Cafe’ system to their game, allowing players to participate in localized text and voice chat. Cafés can also host events and stream remote videos, making them ideal for social gathering places.

And that seems to be just the beginning of what Upland is up to! They’ve released a roadmap for Q3 that’s packed with a number of updates, focusing on additional tweaks and player ownership. With a steady stream of active players, Upland looks set to move into a new, virtual world stage that may attract some additional players who aren’t necessarily interested in the property management aspect of the game!

Game distribution platforms

The number of different gaming platforms willing to provide web3 gaming content to us continues to grow. Steam’s open rejection of games containing NFTs has opened the doors for plenty of other platforms to go into space.

These include Epic Games, Elixir Gaming, Xterio, and others. And then we have some combined developer/distribution platforms like Gala Games, Vulcan Forged and to some extent Ronin. And there’s another layer: those who want to build all the tools to help players create and host games. This includes the renamed Hytopia, Alterverse, and The Sandbox, just to name a few. Some are some kind of combination, like Immutable X.

As web3 gaming grows, so will these platforms – many of them find ways to bridge the gap between web2 and web3. Whichever of these can do this first is likely to become a prime shaker and move into the web3 space!
