Sam Bankman-Fried has reportedly only eaten bread and water in prison due to the lack of vegan options in his prison.
According to a report by Matthew Russell Lee of Press downtownlawyers for the disgraced FTX founder told Magistrate Judge Sarah Netburn in court on Tuesday that Bankman-Fried had not received his Adderall for 11 days and was only served a “meat diet.”
Mark Cohen, one of Bankman-Fried’s lawyers, said that made things difficult for his client, who reportedly follows a vegan diet.
“They serve him a meat diet. He only eats bread and water, and sometimes peanut butter.”
Judge Netburn reportedly said she would investigate Bankman-Fried’s diet and medication issues.
So did Christian Everdell, Bankman-Fried’s other attorney claimed that the founder of FTX was dealing with “issues of the Sixth Amendment.”
“Our client cannot prepare for the trial. He had been in pre-trial detention since August 11. No discovery for eleven days, six weeks into trial. It is extensive, it can only be reviewed online…
We have only been offered fictions as solutions. They mentioned the Putnam County Correctional Facility – but we’re told that’s not an option. Then they said they would ask the MDC if our customer could have a computer with internet access in the MDC…
Now the offer is to bring our client to this courthouse two days a week, from nine to three o’clock. But that means unlimited access has gone to two days a week, not even whole days. Even if he can look at it, he can’t convey his thoughts to us.’
The Sixth Amendment to the US Constitution states that anyone charged with a crime must have the right “to be informed of the nature and cause of the charge; to face the witnesses against him; to have a mandatory procedure for obtaining witnesses in his favour, and for the assistance of counsel for his defence.
On Wednesday, District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan reportedly issued an order giving Bankman-Fried the green light to meet with his attorneys daily at New York’s Southern District Courthouse, according to to Russell Lee.
Bankman-Fried faces a slew of charges for allegedly defrauding clients, mishandling their billions of dollars worth of money, and making illegal political donations. If convicted, he could face more than 100 years in prison.
The founder of the FTX was initially placed under house arrest on $250 million bail, but was sent to prison earlier this month after allegedly tampering with a witness. His trial begins on October 2.
