The Department of Justice (DOJ) says it is unhappy with the current bail conditions of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried after the disgraced crypto entrepreneur allegedly tampered with witnesses and tried his best to obstruct investigations.
In a court filing, the DOJ is asking Judge Lewis Kaplan to revoke Bankman-Fried’s bail and take him into custody because it is unlikely the former billionaire will be willing to abide by his preliminary terms.
“The government is writing in further support of its motion to revoke the defendant’s bail and for the court to issue an arrest warrant. The defendant’s attempts to tamper with witnesses and violate the government’s and public’s right to a fair trial and due process of justice, and his pattern of circumventing his bail conditions in that pursuit, demonstrate that no series terms of provisional release, the safety of the community and that it is unlikely that the defendant will fully comply with the terms of release.”
The DOJ reports Bankman-Fried’s deliberate leak of diaries of Caroline Ellison, the former CEO of Alameda Research, the trading arm of FTX.
The agency says Bankman-Fried’s decision to leak the writings was an attempt to “impede, prevent, or discourage” Ellison from testifying.
“More recently, the defendant’s leak of Ellison’s private writings is yet another example of the defendant attempting to intimidate and corruptly persuade Ellison regarding her upcoming trial testimony, as well as attempting to influence or influence the testimony of other potential trial witnesses. avoid creating the specter that puts their most intimate affairs at risk of being mentioned in the press.
Bankman-Fried is currently out on bail and lives at his parents’ home in Paolo Alto, California.
