Sam Bankman-Fried pushes back on jail time and requests to leave prison five days a week: report

Former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried is reportedly asking for a more lenient prison schedule so he can prepare for his pre-trial defense in October.

Bloomberg reports that Bankman-Fried’s lawyers have written to U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan advocating a five-day-a-week leave of absence from the former CEO of the FTX to review documents.

The report quotes Bankman-Fried’s attorney, Christian Everdell, as saying the FTX co-founder “will have no hope of reviewing the vast amount of documents under the existing prison schedule.”

Bloomberg quotes Everdell’s statement:

“Last week, the government produced three-quarters of a million pages of Slack communications that should have been produced months ago…”

The Bloomberg report says that in his letter to Judge Kaplan, Everdell tried to give Bankman-Fried access to a laptop with internet access and time to meet with his lawyers. Prison officials reportedly resisted the idea of transferring the FTX co-founder to a smaller facility where he had access to a laptop with internet access, which prosecutors had initially suggested.

According to the report, prosecutors have said it is impractical to load all the documents onto a laptop, but have offered to load them onto hard drives that Bankman-Fried can then use on computers available at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, the main prison for suspects. awaiting federal trials in New York State.

Bankman-Fried was arrested in December 2022 and several criminal charges were brought against him, including bank fraud, commodities fraud and securities fraud. He was initially placed on house arrest on $250 million bail, but his terms were dropped earlier this month after he allegedly tampered with a witness. His trial begins on October 2.
