Sensitive data from top crypto exchange Binance was reportedly leaked by a GitHub user onto the GitHub platform and that data was available for months.
Binance is a crypto exchange that ranks the best in terms of 24-hour crypto trading volume on the platform. This digital asset trading platform is known for its highly responsive crypto trading service and the security of its funds against hacking incidents. In the past, Binance faced very rare hacking incidents, which gave crypto traders confidence to use the Binance exchange.
Recently, 404Media published a report and confirmed that Binance’s sensitive data, such as infrastructure diagrams, internal passwords, and other technical information, was posted on the popular software code sharing platform GitHub.
This sensitive information was available for a few months and when the Binance team noticed this issue, they subsequently removed it from GitHub using a copyright takedown notice.
The report claimed that leaked data was highly sensitive data of Binance as any bad actor could use that data to harm Binance financially and cause customer confusion.
On the other hand, a Binance spokesperson added that all such reports are true, but the data was not very sensitive and there was a very rare chance of misuse.
Binance and legal hurdles
The crypto exchange Binance has been under major legal hurdles since mid-2023 due to the legal actions of the US enforcement agencies.
So far, Binance has paid more than $4 billion in fines to settle charges from US regulators. But still, the legal battle against the Securities Exchange and Commission (SEC) agency is active and co-founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) is also defending himself in court for violating US financial laws through the Binance exchange.
Due to these legal hurdles, Binance is failing to find new local partners in most of the jurisdiction. We recently reported that Binance failed to re-enter the UK crypto market as all UK local companies distanced themselves from the exchange.
